遠江（とおとうみ）は現在の静岡県にあたります。
画面を斜めに横切る巨大な材木と、それを支える柱が描かれています。
その大胆な構図は驚くべきものです。材木と柱と同じ形を思わせる富士山が、その間に見えるように配置されています。
また、この絵に描かれている人物の表現も非常に興味深いものです。職人たちは、のこぎりを使いながらまるで不可能とも思えるような作業を行っています。母親の背中に背負われた赤ん坊は、よく見ると真上の巨大な材木をじっと見つめています。
さらに、子どものそばの焚き火から立ち上る煙は、西洋画のような表現で描かれており、その流れる軌跡が巨大な材木と交差するように配置され、画面全体の構図に安定感を与えています。
これは、北斎の卓越した技量が真に発揮された傑作です。

Cover: Katsushika Hokusai “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Mountains of Tōtōmi”
Tōtōmi corresponds to present-day Shizuoka Prefecture.
It depicts a massive timber cutting diagonally across the scene and the pillars supporting it.
The bold composition is astonishing. Mount Fuji, evoking the same shape as the timber and pillars, is positioned to be visible between them.
The depiction of the figures in this painting is also highly intriguing. The craftsmen are performing seemingly impossible tasks while using saws. A baby carried on its mother's back, upon closer inspection, stares intently at the enormous timber directly above.
Furthermore, the smoke rising from the fire near the child is rendered in a manner reminiscent of Western painting. Its flowing trajectory is positioned to intersect with the giant timber, lending stability to the overall composition.
This is a masterpiece where Hokusai's exceptional skill is truly displayed.
