世界で最も有名な絵画の一つで、一般には「赤富士」として知られています。
「凱風（かいふう）」とは南風のことを指します。夏から秋にかけての晴れた早朝、富士山が山全体を紅色に染めて輝くことがあると言われています。
この作品では、画面いっぱいに大胆に富士山が描かれ、青い空を背景に鮮やかな赤色の富士山が表現されています。北斎自身も、この光景を驚きと畏敬の念をもって眺めていたのかもしれません。
この「凱風快晴」の特徴の一つは、富士山の斜面に見える木目模様です。版木の木目をそのまま活かすことで、ぼかし技法だけで描くと単調になりがちな富士山の表現に大きな変化を与えています。広い面積を占める富士山の描写に豊かな表情をもたらし、さらに空気の流れまでも感じさせる効果を生み出しています。

“Kaihu” refers to the south wind. It is said that on clear early mornings from summer to autumn, Mount Fuji sometimes glows, its entire mountain body dyed crimson.
In this work, Mount Fuji is boldly depicted to fill the entire canvas, expressed as a vivid red mountain against a blue sky. Hokusai himself may have gazed upon this sight with wonder and reverence.
One distinctive feature of “Kaifū Kaisetsu” is the woodgrain pattern visible on the slopes of Mount Fuji. By utilizing the natural grain of the woodblock, it introduces significant variation to the depiction of Mount Fuji, which can often appear monotonous when rendered solely with blurring techniques. This brings rich expression to the large area occupied by Mount Fuji and creates an effect that even suggests the flow of air.
