表紙は葛飾北斎「富嶽三十六景 御厩川岸より両国橋夕陽見」です
この場面は、現在の東京都台東区蔵前2丁目付近にある大池川の川岸を描いています。江戸時代、この一帯には大池渡しがあり、旅行者たちを隅田川を渡って、現在の隅田区横森1丁目周辺へと運んでいました。
構図の中央には、様々な乗客を乗せた共同渡し船が川を渡る様子が描かれており、古き江戸の日常生活を垣間見ることができます。画面の上半分を空が占める広々とした構図が特徴的です。夕暮れの薄明かりの中、両国橋や川沿いの町並み、そして富士山が徐々に柔らかなシルエットへと溶け込み、夕暮れのノスタルジックな雰囲気を美しく捉えています。
本作品は、『隅田川石屋之里』や『本所立川』と並び、名作『富嶽三十六景』の中でも隅田川地域と最も深く結びついた三枚の版画の一つとされている。
This scene depicts the banks of the Oike River, located near present-day Kuramae 2-chome in Taito Ward, Tokyo. In the Edo period, this area was home to the Oike Ferry, which connected travelers across the Sumida River to the area around present-day Yokomori 1-chome in Sumida Ward.
At the center of the composition, a shared ferry boat carries a variety of passengers across the river, offering a glimpse into everyday life in old Edo. The painting features a spacious composition, with the sky occupying the upper half of the scene. In the fading light of evening, Ryogoku Bridge, the riverside townscape, and Mount Fuji gradually dissolve into soft silhouettes, beautifully capturing the nostalgic atmosphere of twilight.
Together with Sumidagawa Sekiya no Sato and Honjo Tachikawa, this work is considered one of the three prints from the famous series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji most closely associated with the Sumida area.
