この絵は、江戸（現在の東京）の賑やかな商業地区、駿河町を描いたものです。画面に描かれている大きな店は「越後屋」で、後に日本最古の百貨店の一つである三越となった有名な呉服店です。
「現金のみ、値引き不可」と書かれた看板は、越後屋が導入し、江戸で大成功を収めた画期的な定価販売制度を反映しています。当時、駿河町という地名は、この店そのものを指す言葉として広く知られていました。
構図は、店の三角形の屋根のラインと背景に聳える富士山を巧みに対比させており、頭上を舞う凧が動きと季節の雰囲気を添えています。通りに立つ客の視点から上を見上げるこのダイナミックな遠近法が、江戸の活気あふれる商店街を生き生きと描き出しています。
この場面は、伝説的な浮世絵の巨匠、葛飾北斎による名作『富嶽三十六景』の一部です。
This artwork depicts Surugamachi, a bustling commercial district in Edo (old Tokyo). The large shop shown in the scene is Echigoya, the famous kimono store that later became Mitsukoshi, one of Japan’s oldest department stores.
Signs reading “Cash only, no haggling” reflect the revolutionary fixed-price system introduced by Echigoya, which became extremely successful in Edo. At the time, the name Surugamachi was almost synonymous with the store itself.
The composition cleverly contrasts the triangular roofline of the shop with Mount Fuji rising in the background, while a kite flying overhead adds movement and seasonal atmosphere. This dynamic perspective—looking upward from the viewpoint of a customer standing in the street—brings the lively shopping district of Edo to life.
This scene is part of the celebrated series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji by the legendary ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai.
